I currently have a UGREEN DXP2800 with 2) Seagate IronWolf 16TB NAS Internal Hard Drive HDD – 3.5 Inch SATA 6Gb/s 7200 RPM 256MB Cache, 2) Samsung 990 PRO SSD 1TB PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 Internal Solid State Hard Drive, Seq. Read Speeds Up to 7,450 MB/s, and 16 GB of RAM. I am thinking about upgrading to a DXP4800 Plus. My current issues is that UGREEN OS does not offer full disk encryption and I want full disk encryption. What would be the best OS to install on a new DXP4800+ that offers full disk encryption? Any recommendations for the amount of RAM for the DXP4800+? Thank you for all your help.

What to install instead of UGREENOS
If full disk encryption is essential, these operating systems handle it properly:
TrueNAS Scale
This is the strongest option for full disk encryption. It supports native ZFS encryption, which is very reliable. You get folder snapshots, integrity checks, and strong data protection. It runs well on the DXP4800 Plus as long as you do not require deep energy saving and you are comfortable with a slightly steeper learning curve.
Unraid
Unraid supports encrypted array drives and encrypted cache pools. It is more flexible with mixed drive sizes and easier for app management. It is a good choice if you want a simpler user experience than TrueNAS.
Linux with OpenMediaVault
You can get full disk encryption using LUKS. This gives you a lightweight system that works very well for home usage. Not as advanced as ZFS, but very reliable.
If you want Synology style simplicity
Xpenology (community DSM) supports encrypted shared folders, but not true full disk encryption. If your requirement is strict sector level encryption, skip this.
Best choice
If your goal is full encryption at the disk level, go with TrueNAS Scale. It is the most proven option for this specific requirement.
How much RAM for the DXP4800 Plus
If you choose TrueNAS Scale
ZFS benefits from memory, so
minimum 16GB
recommended 32GB if you are using encryption, apps, or virtual machines.
If you choose Unraid or OpenMediaVault
16GB is already plenty.
Only go to 32GB if you plan to run containers, databases, or heavy apps.
Your current hardware
Your IronWolf drives and Samsung 990 Pro SSDs will work perfectly in the DXP4800 Plus with any of the OS options. You will simply need to wipe them when installing a new system because encryption requires building the storage pool from scratch.
