For the DS1520+, Synology officially lists its memory as 8 GB DDR4, made up of a 4 GB module soldered on the board plus a 4 GB SO-DIMM that you can replace or upgrade. The total officially supported capacity is 8 GB.
That means if you want to stay within Synology’s official support and warranty, replace the existing 4 GB SO-DIMM with an 8 GB DDR4 2666 SO-DIMM and you will have the maximum supported memory.
There are reports from the community of people successfully installing a 16 GB DDR4 SO-DIMM in that slot, giving around 20 GB total (4 GB onboard + 16 GB). People have posted about this working without obvious issues.
However, that larger upgrade is unofficial and outside of Synology’s published specs, so results can vary and Synology will not support it under warranty.
If you want the safest, most stable option with your older DSM 6 system, stick to the official spec and go to 8 GB total with a quality DDR4 2666 SO-DIMM. You’ll see the most benefit from that upgrade for Plex, snapshots and general performance without risking unsupported hardware.
