For memory the AS5402T works well with a single 16GB SODIMM. Look for DDR4 at 3200 or 2666 from Crucial or Kingston. These kits are easy to source and have been widely tested in this model. One 16GB stick is more than enough for home use, Plex, light container work, and the usual background apps.
For the M.2 area you can install two NVMe drives and place them in a RAID1 mirror. A pair of 2TB or 4TB NVMe drives from Samsung, WD Black, Crucial P5 Plus, or Kingston KC3000 will work well. This gives you a fast cache tier and a protected system volume for applications. It also helps with photo indexing, thumbnail generation, and any AI features Asustor releases in the future. For large storage you can go with two HDDs in RAID1. The choice between 8TB, 10TB, or 12TB really depends on your long term plans. WD Red Plus or Seagate IronWolf are the safest options for this unit. Twelve terabyte drives give the best price per terabyte right now and will give you a comfortable footprint for many years. You can start with two drives and expand later if your needs grow. |
