So. Many. Choices.

#1
Hey there,

In short, I've got too many options and I'm paralysed by choice options. I'm looking to move away from Synology (currently DS918+) and my main use cases are data storage, Synology Drive, and Plex. Here's where the problem comes in: I currently have access to a lot of options: I've got a UNAS Pro, a MinisForum S100, a MinisForum MS-01 (96GB RAM), M4 Mac Mini (16GB, 2TB), etc. so I'm a bit overwhelmed by what I could/should do. I've tried Proxmox and it's a LOT, I don't have an Unraid license, and I've not yet tried TrueNAS... (came into the hardware after the passing of my best friend of nearly 20 years) so that's why I have all the options. I've got 7x 14TB Drives to hand, too, 3 of which are in the Synology already running Plex.

Help?! Smile

Thanks!

Chris

Hi Chris, that is a great selection of hardware to work with and I get how easy it is to overthink the options. Since you already have capable systems, I would start with Unraid. It is simple to set up, runs on almost any of your devices, and makes installing Plex, backup tools, and Docker apps very straightforward without much manual work. You could begin with the MinisForum MS-01 or the UNAS Pro and expand from there later if needed. If you prefer something more like a ready-made NAS, QNAP is the most polished option after Synology. It still has a broad app library, good virtualization support, and strong Plex integration. But with what you already own, Unraid gives you an easy and flexible way to build a system that can match or even surpass what you had with Synology.
