HDD Compatibility

#1
I just purchased a Synology DS 1522+ to upgrade our storage. We currently have a Synology DS 1517+ that has been running for about 7 years.

The existing DS1517+ has five WD Red Pro 8TB drives. I purchased the same for DS1522+. I was sure these drives were listed on Synology's Compatibility List. When I started the process to set up the DS15222+, the DMS alerted me that the five drives are not on the compatibility list, but WD Red Plus drives are.

Is this something to be concerned about or is ignoring the alert and proceeding not a problem.

Thanks!

You're right — Synology has gotten stricter in recent years with its official compatibility list, especially with newer models like the DS1522+. While WD Red Plus drives are on the list, WD Red Pro drives often aren't, even though they’re high-performance and well-suited for NAS use.

That said, many users (especially upgrading from older Synology units like your DS1517+) have reported running WD Red Pro drives in newer models without any issues. The alert is more of a warning than a hard stop. As long as the drives are healthy (SMART check passes) and you don’t run into performance or reliability issues, you can proceed.

Just keep in mind that if you ever need Synology support, they might refer to the incompatibility alert.

If the drives have been working fine in the DS1517+, they should perform similarly in the DS1522+.
