Which NAS for 4K RAW video?

#1
hey guys, I wanted to know which NAS you thought was better for video editing.

I was looking at QNAP NAS TVS 872-XT or the TerraMaster T12-500 Pro.

The extra disk space on the TerraMaster is kinda appealing as most projects are around 1 - 2TB worth of Media. But i'm worried about the over all speed of the T12-500 Pro compared to the QNAP. However the QNAP is around 1000GBP more to by. Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks so much and keep up the amazing work!

If you’re considering QNAP’s 74 or 88X series for video editing or demanding workflows, here's a breakdown to help you decide between them:

QNAP TVS-74 Series (e.g., TVS-472XT, TVS-674)
Processor: Typically equipped with Intel Core i3/i5/i7 processors, these models offer a good balance of performance for most home and small business workflows, including video editing.
Storage Capacity: 4-bay and 6-bay models in this series are great for users who don’t need huge storage right off the bat but still want fast speeds and expandability.
Performance: These models generally come with 10GbE ports and Thunderbolt 3, which are perfect for Mac editing setups and transferring large media files quickly. While not as powerful as the 88X series, they still offer solid speed for most 4K video workflows.
Price: The TVS-74 series is usually more affordable than the 88X series, making it a great option for small businesses or home setups that need performance without going into the high-end price range.
QNAP TVS-88X Series (e.g., TVS-872X, TVS-1288X)
Processor: The TVS-88X series features more powerful Intel Xeon processors or high-end Intel Core i7/i9, which makes these systems extremely capable for video editing and handling larger, more complex tasks. These CPUs excel in multi-threaded workloads, which is excellent for 4K RAW video editing or multiple users accessing the NAS at once.
Storage Capacity: These models offer 8-bay and 12-bay configurations, making them ideal for users needing a ton of storage for large-scale media projects.
Performance: They support 10GbE and have even more advanced SSD caching options, helping with faster read/write speeds, especially important for high-resolution editing tasks.
Scalability & Future-Proofing: If you're looking for something that can grow with your needs, the TVS-88X series is highly scalable, especially when paired with expansion units, making it perfect for long-term video production workflows.
Price: The 88X series is a premium option, and you’ll be paying for the extra power and storage.
Recommendation:
For Video Editing and Small-to-Medium Businesses: If you need high-speed performance for 4K video editing, the QNAP TVS-88X series would be the best choice due to its Xeon processors, higher storage capacity, and better overall performance for professional video workflows.
For Home Use or Small Business: If you don’t need huge storage and want a more budget-friendly option without sacrificing performance too much, the TVS-74 series is a great pick. It provides solid performance, 10GbE, and Thunderbolt 3 at a more affordable price.
Both are excellent choices, but the TVS-88X series is for those who want the best performance and future scalability, while the TVS-74 series balances performance and price nicely.
