Should I upgrade RAM and Drives on DS218j Diskstation

#1
Thanks for all the info you provide! I am wondering if it worthwhile upgrading my NAS RAM to whatever the maximum is? Probably un-soldering/soldering RAM will discourage me from attempting with my DS218J model. If I can do that, how large can the hard drives be if I choose to replace them? I am running out of space fast. Thanks in advance for any help you provide!

Just to clarify, the RAM on the DS218j is actually soldered onto the board, so unfortunately, it cannot be upgraded. You won’t be able to add more RAM to that model, which is something to keep in mind if you were considering a performance boost.

As for the drives, as long as they are SATA-compatible, you should be able to upgrade to larger drives without issue. The DS218j supports drives of any size, as long as they are SATA-based. However, you should check the power supply if you’re considering larger drives, as some higher-capacity drives may require more power, and it's important to ensure that the power supply in your NAS can handle the increased demand when using larger drives.
