Multiplatform backup server

#1
Device to be used as Apple Time Machine & backup for Windows PC. Ablility to back up our Android phones a plus. Want 2 LAN ports (one for each computer) & wireless connectivity for backing up NAS to One Drive. Also want to be able to use as a plex server (both on local wifi & remotely). Want to run RAID 1, 5, 6 or 10 and want it to be upgradable.

For your needs, I’d recommend either the Synology DS423+ or the QNAP TS-464.

The Synology DS423+ is a great choice for backups (Time Machine, Windows, Android) and supports RAID 1, 5, 6, or 10. It has Synology’s user-friendly DSM software and enough power for Plex streaming on your local network and remotely (though it’s better for direct play).

Alternatively, the QNAP TS-464 offers similar features but includes an Intel Celeron processor, which is better for Plex transcoding if you plan to stream 4K or unsupported formats. It also has dual LAN and excellent upgrade options.

Pair either with 2x 4TB Seagate IronWolf drives for RAID 1 (4TB usable), with room to upgrade later. These options are a bit above your $400 budget (~$600 with drives), but they’ll provide great flexibility and longevity.
