Low Power NAS 9-11W

#1
Searching for DIY NAS Parts for Jonsbo N3 or N4. Need a IDLE Power cons. of 9-14W!
Engery in Germany is really expensive...
Thought about Topton N100? It needs to run sometimes max 2 VM (light weight linux distros often). But I need min. 2 Ethernetports and Docker for must also run on the hardware?
THANKS!
Greetings Marcel

Building a low-power NAS that fits within a 9-14W idle power consumption is definitely challenging but doable, especially with the right parts. Here’s a suggested setup considering your requirements:

1. Case: Jonsbo N3 or N4
Both are great choices for a compact and efficient build. The N3 is more compact, while the N4 offers a bit more space for drives and cooling.
2. Motherboard & CPU: Topton N100 Mini PC
Topton N100: This is an excellent choice due to its low power consumption and efficiency. The N100 is a power-efficient CPU that should keep your idle power well within your target range.
Ethernet Ports: Some Topton N100 models come with dual Ethernet ports, which is perfect for your requirement. Make sure to select the right variant.
RAM & Storage: Ensure the Topton model you choose can support enough RAM for your VMs and Docker. Typically, 8GB or 16GB of RAM should suffice.
3. Storage: SSDs for Low Power
SSD: Consider using SSDs instead of HDDs for storage as they consume less power. For your 8TB storage requirement, you could use two 4TB SSDs, such as the Samsung 870 QVO or Crucial MX500. These are power-efficient and should help keep your overall power consumption low.
4. Power Supply: Efficient PicoPSU
PicoPSU: Use a PicoPSU, which is known for its high efficiency and low idle power draw. It’s perfect for low-power builds like this. Pair it with a small, efficient power brick.
5. Cooling: Passive or Low-Power Fan
Passive Cooling or Low-Power Fan: The Topton N100 is passively cooled, which is ideal. If you need additional cooling, go for a low-power, quiet fan like a Noctua, which won’t significantly add to your power draw.
6. Operating System: Lightweight Linux with Docker
Lightweight Linux Distro: Use a lightweight Linux distro like Ubuntu Server or Debian, which is well-suited for running Docker and light VMs without taxing your hardware.
