SHR verses Raid 5

#1
In a DS1522+ with 5 Exos X24 24TB's is there any point using SHR or is it just best to use Raid 5 if there is no real prospect of any upgrading etc?

When deciding between SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID) and RAID 5 for your DS1522+ with 5 Exos X24 24TB drives, it's essential to consider your specific needs and preferences.

Here's a breakdown to help you make an informed decision:

Synology Hybrid RAID (SHR):

SHR offers flexibility and simplicity in storage management, allowing for mixed drive sizes and providing automatic volume expansion when adding larger drives.
If you anticipate adding or upgrading drives in the future, SHR can be advantageous as it accommodates different drive sizes without sacrificing capacity.
Additionally, SHR provides data protection similar to RAID levels like RAID 5 but with added flexibility.
RAID 5:

RAID 5 provides data striping with parity across the drives, offering both performance and redundancy.
It requires identical drive sizes and does not allow for easy expansion or mixing of drive sizes.
RAID 5 typically offers slightly better performance compared to SHR due to its simpler data layout.
Considering your setup with 5 Exos X24 24TB drives and no immediate plans for upgrading, RAID 5 could be a suitable choice if you prioritize performance and simplicity. However, if you value flexibility and potential future expansion, SHR might be the better option.

Ultimately, both SHR and RAID 5 offer reliable data protection and performance benefits, so it comes down to your specific preferences and requirements.
