Migration from 918+ to 920+/923+

#1
Hi, I have a dead DS918+. It doesn’t have any blinking blue lights, and it’s just dead when I press the power button – have bought a new power adaptor and I’m currently waiting for it to be delivered.

In the event my 918+ is not reparable, I’ve started researching the updated versions of the 4-bay NAS (i.e. 920+ and 923+) to replace my 918+ in hopes of just doing a HDD migration to get everything up and running again.

My current HDD configuration is:
Bay 1: 16TB Ultrastar WUH721816ALE6L4
Bay 2: 4TB IronWolf ST4000VN008 (SC60)
Bay 3: 16TB Ultrastar WUH721816ALE6L4
Bay 4: 12TB ST12000NE008 (EN02)

I’ve checked the HDD compatibility lists for 920+ and 923+, and 923+ doesn’t seem to support my Ultrastars?

Is it possible to migrate my HDDs from 918+ to 923+ even though the HDDs I have HDDs that are not on the compatibility list for the 923+?

Given my use case (Synology drive for files, WebDAV, LAN streaming) would it be better to opt for an older 920+ or 923+?

Hello there! It seems like your DS918+ encountered some issues, and we hope the new power adapter resolves the problem. If it doesn't, don't worry, you can still migrate your HDDs to a new DS920+ or DS923+ if needed. Even if your Ultrastar drives are not listed in the compatibility list for the DS923+, they should still work, although you might encounter a warning message that you can simply disable.

When deciding between the DS920+ and DS923+, consider your specific use case. If your primary focus is on multimedia remote streaming, the DS920+ would be an excellent choice. On the other hand, if you plan to use virtualization and need more power for local tasks, the DS923+ might be a better fit. Both models will serve as efficient Synology drives for files, WebDAV, and LAN streaming, but the DS923+ offers more capabilities for demanding tasks.
