Switch RAID 1 to 5 on TR 004 with hard/software ?

#1
Question
Hi everyone,

 First time poster here.

I have currently a 453D (4x10Gb, RAID5, business data lives on there and some more used picture files, separate backups on external drives) and need more space exclusively for picture files (photographer here, tired of external drives).

I am thinking of getting a TR 004 with 4x16 GB  - in the end. To be a bit more cost-effective I am thinking of doing 2x16Gb on Raid 1 on the Tr004 for now and later add 2 more 16 Gb's to switch to Raid 5.

And I've seen that when you do it software controlled (separate pool) over the NAS it switches automatically to RAID 5 , software controlled...BUT
my question is
if someone knows how it would work if I wanted to use the switches (hardware raid) on the TR 004...???

do I set it in the beginning there (expansion) to RAID 1 or JBOD ?
and how would it work when I add 2 drives later to switch to Raid5...
do I switch there (expansion) to Raid5 and on the NAS or only on the nas and leave Tr004 at (?? Raid 1/JBOD) or will there be a conflict??

reason for asking is that somewhere on the youtube channel it was mentioned that utilizing the hardware raid on the TR 004 takes a bit computing pressure away from the NAS but not sure if the raid switches on the expansion would interfere/cause trouble with whatever the nas thinks it should be.

any help appreciated
thanks
Wolfgang

When using the QNAP TR-004 expansion unit, you have the option to choose between hardware and software RAID. It's important to note that if you opt for hardware RAID and want to switch between RAID 1 and RAID 5, the drives will be formatted during the switch. On the other hand, if you use software RAID while the TR-004 is connected to your QNAP NAS, you can migrate from RAID 1 to RAID 5 without the need for formatting the drives.

Thank you that helps!! Smile
