NAS requirement for Mac Based small CPA firm

#1
Hi,

We have a requirement for NAS in our small 10 member CFA firm.

Our office has 1 iMac (used as a file server), 10 Mac Mini and 1 smb windows desktop. All the devices are connected to the network using LAN cables.

We are running out of storage on our iMac and require a NAS to replace it.

We have a very simple requirement of using the NAS to access files stored on it. The end user will open the file using the NAS, work on the file and save it. The files will NOT be moved on to the user’s desktop unless absolutely necessary.

We would be open to the possibility of accessing the NAS when at a client site but the security is a major concern for us (ransomware)

Our current data size is about 2.5 TB and it looks like it will grow. This will be our first NAS after horrible past experience with WD MyCloud and Seagate Black Armour.

We are undecided between Synology or QNAP and also between a 2 bay or a 4 bay NAS.

Based on your requirements, both the QNAP TS-x64 series and Synology DS923+/DS723+ with 10GbE upgrade option would be suitable options. Since you have a small firm, I would recommend going for a 4-bay NAS, which would provide you with more storage options and redundancy for data protection.

Both QNAP and Synology offer excellent security features to protect your data from ransomware attacks. You can use built-in tools like Antivirus, Firewall, and Two-Factor Authentication to secure your NAS. Additionally, both vendors provide regular software updates to address security vulnerabilities and improve performance.

When it comes to choosing between QNAP and Synology, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both vendors offer similar features, and it largely depends on which interface and software you find more intuitive and user-friendly. I would suggest exploring the user interfaces of both QNAP and Synology to see which one you prefer.
