It will be easier to use DSM6. There is no drive compatibility limitation introduced. Drives that are not on their compatibility list will very likely work just fine.
DSM7 is where they try to sell their own drives (Toshiba drives) and scare people. But with a few files altered you can also make dsm7 accept all drives.
