Yes, DS220+ would be a much better choice. Not only it can be upgraded, but it also has no limits on what apps you can install or run. Value series NAS like DS218 / play do not even allow Virtual machines or anything complicated like that. Value models are for simple backup and file streaming purposes only. Not a very future proof choice. They will likely release a new 218/play replacement this year, but they will only change a newer CPU which is still going to be limited. Transcoding would be better performing on plus series with Celeron inside.WD Red or Ironwolf are both good options including SMR drives. RAID5 is when CMR would be recommended.The best Ethernet option would be via LAN powerline adapters RE450. But sockets are not on the same loop/cable then WiFi+LAN will be the option.I hope this helps.
