If you want to keep the costs down, I would recommend Synology and their own apps. They have managed to create their software to perform much better around the given hardware compared to this party apps like Plex. You can use Plex locally, but for remote access, I would recommend first-party apps only. You can also keep on using iTunes if you wish so.I would recommend multimedia friendly models such as DS220+/720+ or more future proof options like DS420+/ DS920+. These models feature graphics chip which allows you to access multimedia remotely.I hope this helps.
