SSD Cache

#2
For your Synology DS920+, since you’re storing family videos/photos and using Plex plus graphic design files, the way you use your two 500 GB Samsung 980 SSDs really depends on what you want to speed up. If your design work or Plex libraries are large and you often work directly off the NAS, a read-and-write cache gives the best overall performance boost because it accelerates both reads and writes. That means thumbnails, previews, and multiple users hitting files will feel more responsive, and DSM will leverage the SSDs for metadata, random access and write bursts. If your main workload is mostly reading large media (for Plex and viewing photos) and you rarely edit stored files directly on the NAS, a read-only cache is simpler and still helps with frequently accessed files without impacting writes. For your combination of media, photos and design files, read-and-write cache makes the most sense because it gives you general snappiness across everything, especially when many clients hit the NAS at once. Just keep in mind that write cache should be mirrored for safety, and two 500 GB SSDs mirror nicely.
