The primary NAS
For your main system the best choice is the QNAP TVS h674 or TVS h874 with Intel Core CPU and integrated graphics. These models have hardware acceleration for Plex, excellent performance for storage and virtual machines, and strong surveillance features with QVR Elite. They also support GPU add on if you ever want to do AI camera detection. With six or eight bays you can install large capacity drives and expect many years before you fill up storage. They are more rugged internally than consumer models and have better airflow which will help in marine environments.
The backup NAS
Since you will be on a boat and cannot buy new drives easily, you want a backup system on board. A second QNAP like the TS 464 or TS 262 used as a JBOD or simple mirrored backup works well. It gives you local redundancy without needing the same heavy hardware twice. You can schedule replication from the main NAS every night so you always have an up to date copy if anything goes wrong.
Drive capacity
Because of your limited access to replacement drives, choose bigger drives from the start. Fourteen TB or sixteen TB IronWolf Pro or WD Red Pro are the best balance of reliability and temperature tolerance. If you expect to shoot lots of video and store years of media, even eighteen TB or twenty two TB drives may be smarter long term. For the h674 I would suggest at least six identical drives, and keep one spare onboard in case one fails.
Camera and surveillance
QNAP supports Reolink and Hikvision cameras very well. On a boat you might want outdoor models with PoE and weather sealing. Four to six cameras is very manageable. For switching, you just need a PoE switch with enough power budget for your cameras. A UniFi USW Lite 8 PoE or TP Link TL SG2008P will work, depending on how many ports you need.
Network setup
For Plex on board and remote access you will want a small router and a proper switch. Since you are in Thailand and moving between marinas, a cellular router like Teltonika or GL inet will give you stable connectivity.
Integrated graphics
The TVS h674 and h874 both have Intel graphics, so Plex hardware transcoding will work very well. QNAP also now supports GPU passthrough for some AI features, which is useful for security cameras.
