which HDDs to use

#2
Those Seagate Desktop HDDs aren’t technically designed for NAS use, but they will still work in your Synology DS423. The main difference is that desktop drives lack vibration control and 24/7 durability features found in NAS models, so they can be less reliable in multi-drive environments over time.

If you plan to use them, I’d recommend sticking with RAID 1 or RAID 10 setups for safety. Both provide redundancy that protects your data if a drive fails, which is especially important when using non-NAS drives.

It’s worth considering NAS-rated drives like Seagate IronWolf or WD Red Plus, which are optimized for RAID environments and longer lifespan.
