Based on what you’ve said (FreeBSD, TrueNAS SCALE, ECC, Windows VMs, longevity), the Minisforum N5 Pro is actually one of the best compact, pre-built platforms available right now that ticks all those boxes:

• Powerful enough for VMs, Plex, and ZFS ✅
Yes, it’s pricier than other N100/N305 DIY builds, but for ZFS with ECC and VM use, you’re not overbuying — you’re future-proofing.
That said, if budget flexibility isn’t unlimited, the only real alternatives are:
• ASRock Rack ITX motherboards + SFF case (Jonsbo N1/N2/N5, etc.)
• Used Xeon/EPYC-based server boards (louder, bulkier)
• CWWK boards with ECC-compatible CPUs (less proven, but interesting)
If the N5 Pro fits your needs now and lets you grow into it (especially with things like passthrough storage, containers, and Windows VMs), I’d say go for it. The regret comes from undershooting your requirements and re-buying 12 months later.
