For 4 editors working simultaneously on 4K 10-bit RAW, you’re right to aim high. That kind of work demands not just large storage, but also high throughput and low latency. A few thoughts:
Why the TVS-h874T isn’t enough
The QNAP TVS-h874T is a fantastic unit for smaller high-performance setups. But as you noticed, it caps out around 160TB because it’s a desktop form factor with 8 bays. Even using the highest-capacity enterprise HDDs available (currently around 22–24TB each), you’re simply limited by the number of bays. You could technically pair it with a QNAP expansion chassis (like TL-R1620Sdc or TL-D1600S), but you’d still be juggling arrays and volumes to hit 250TB, which isn’t ideal for a smooth workflow.
Orico CyberData Series
Orico’s CyberData Series is relatively new and much less proven in the enterprise NAS space. Orico is better known for consumer-grade enclosures and hubs. These newer units do boast huge capacity and some impressive specs, but you’re essentially taking a gamble in terms of long-term support, software maturity, and reliability — especially for a production environment. I wouldn’t recommend Orico yet for critical business video workflows.
What you actually need
If your budget is under INR 700K (~$8,400 USD) and you truly need 250TB of fast shared storage for 4 editors, you’re solidly into rackmount territory. You’ll want:
• At least a 12–16 bay enterprise-grade NAS (more bays means you can use smaller drives and still hit your target capacity).
• Support for 10/25/40GbE networking (to keep up with multiple editors).
• Either QNAP or Synology’s rackmount series, or even a custom-built TrueNAS server with proper ZFS pools.
Suggestions
• QNAP TS-h1683XU-RP: 16-bay ZFS-based rackmount NAS, very high performance, and you can add a couple of JBOD expansion units to grow beyond 250TB easily.
• Synology RS4021xs+ or RS3621xs+: Enterprise rackmount with 12 bays and expandable to 36 drives using RX1223RP units.
• TrueNAS Enterprise: If you’re open to a more customizable and professional setup, you could work with a vendor like iXsystems to spec a system that meets your capacity and speed needs exactly.
Drives
Stick with enterprise-grade CMR drives, like Seagate Exos or WD Gold, in 16–20TB sizes. You’ll likely use RAID-6 or Z2 for redundancy.
Network
Plan for at least 10GbE for each editor, or a 25/40GbE backbone if budget allows, with a managed switch to handle traffic properly.
