Dual NAS Setup?

#2
Thanks for reaching out — your setup idea sounds awesome and totally doable with Synology!

You're spot on thinking about a dual NAS system for multiple properties. It’s actually a pretty common setup for people who want off-site backups and security footage across locations. Synology makes this kind of thing pretty smooth once it's all dialed in.

Here's how you could set it up:
At Property A (Main NAS):
This one would be your main hub — handle backups for your Macs, act as your main file storage, and run Surveillance Station for the local cameras.

At Property B (Secondary NAS):
This could handle cameras at the second location and also be the backup target for footage from Property A. That way, you’ve always got a copy in case something happens at either site.

You can easily use tools like Hyper Backup or Snapshot Replication to sync the important stuff between both NAS units. And with Surveillance Station CMS, you can manage both camera setups from one place — pretty handy.

As for which NAS models to go for:
Honestly, most of the Plus series models will work great — think:

DS423+

DS923+

DS1522+

They're solid, support Docker, handle file sharing and Time Machine really well, and are expandable if your needs grow.

If you want even better surveillance features like remote access hardware transcoding, you might want to look into the DVA series (like the DVA1622 or DVA3221). These are built with surveillance in mind and have GPU-assisted video processing, which is nice for remote viewing and smart alerts.

Budget-wise:
With around $4000 USD, you should be able to grab two good NAS units, decent drives (maybe 8–10TB each), a few extra surveillance licenses (Synology gives 2 free per unit), and maybe even a small UPS if needed.
