I’m preparing to migrate from a WD PR4100 to a QNAP TS-664. There are two parts of your recommended procedure that raise questions for me.
First, backing up data prior to the transfer. I have about 26 TB of data to migrate. The two challenges include obtaining a sufficient backup destination ($$) and the integrity of the backup. Your advice is sound. Each person will need to identify the critical portion of their data and proceed accordingly. I need help with the backup integrity matter.
Second, you state: “Verify data integrity: Once the transfer is complete, make sure all your files are intact on the new Asustor NAS. Double-check that none of the files are corrupted or missing.” With 26TB of thousands of files, how would I ever know if they’ve all been copied, with none corrupted or missing?
What this highlights is my primary question: is there a migration tool that I can run from either the source WD NAS, the destination QNAP NAS, or a networked Mac computer that will validate each file upon copying it to the new NAS? I imagine that a regular MacOS Finder “Get Info” directive can be used to verify matching file quantity and total files size between the source and destination NAS, but this doesn’t ensure data integrity of each file.
Thanks in advance for your advice. I’ve gotten so much value from your YouTube videos and website.
