I have doubts about the compatibility of the new DS425+ and was wondering if buying the DS423+ today would be stupid since it has already been discontinued.

Hi, thanks for your message. The DS423+ is still an excellent choice for small business use, and even though it’s been discontinued, Synology will support it with updates for several more years. It runs DSM 7.3 perfectly and works with all major third-party drives like WD, Seagate, and Toshiba.
That said, the newer DS425+ now also supports third-party drives, as Synology has rolled back their drive-locking policy. It offers newer hardware, slightly better performance, and a longer product life cycle, so if the price difference isn’t large, it’s the more future-proof option. If you find the DS423+ at a good discount, it’s still a smart and reliable buy. But if you want longer official support and the latest hardware, the DS425+ is now the best all-round option. |
