I have a Synology 218+ with 2x12tb Seagate iron wolf HD's.
I use the Nas for a little storage (photos, and save file 2 tb max) but need more space for PLEX.

I don't have RAID, I have an external backup solution.

What is the best NAS 2 or 4 bay, on the market, where I can expand on my capacity.

I'm only interested in PLEX, no other apps.

If Plex is your only priority and you already back up externally, you can focus entirely on CPU power, 4K performance, and expansion flexibility. Since you’re not using RAID, the goal is just raw storage and smooth transcoding.

For your budget (around £1000), the best options right now are:

1. QNAP TS-464 – Around £550
Intel N5095 CPU with integrated graphics for hardware Plex transcoding, 2× M.2 NVMe slots for cache, and HDMI 2.0 output. You can easily expand storage with an external 5-bay expansion unit (TR-004/106). It’s quiet, Plex-ready, and perfect for local or remote streaming.

2. Synology DS923+ – Around £600
More polished software (DSM), expandable via DX525, but the AMD CPU lacks integrated graphics, so no hardware transcoding. It’s great for direct playback or pre-converted media but not ideal for live 4K transcoding.

3. UGREEN NASync DXP4800 Plus – Around £700–£800
Newer option with 4-bay capacity, Intel 8-core CPU, 2.5GbE, and excellent Plex performance once configured.

If you only need Plex, the QNAP TS-464 gives the best overall balance of power, flexibility, and future expansion. You can even pair it with larger 18–22TB drives for huge capacity without RAID.
