I'm a journalist with large volumes of photo and video content. This would be a small business usage case.

I'm looking for a reliable system that can hold several years of content but also connect, somehow? to older backed-up content.

I currently have a four-bay drive holder that I manually drag files onto - two of the bays are backup.

I'm not sure if I need a NAS or DAS? I don't need remote access, though it would be a nice benefit.

I'm looking for a reliable local system that has some redundancy, and can grow as the content grows.

It sounds like you’d really benefit from moving to a NAS setup. A NAS will give you local storage with built-in redundancy, and many models can grow with your needs over time. You don’t need to use the remote access features if you don’t want to, but they’re there if you ever do.

Given your $3000 budget and need for around 80TB, you could go with an 8-bay NAS like the Synology DS1821+ or QNAP TVS-h874, paired with 14–16TB drives. That would give you a solid amount of space with some redundancy (RAID 5 or RAID 6). You could also keep using your current 4-bay enclosure to pull in older backups.

Hi! Thanks for the suggestions! A NAS setup sounds perfect for my needs. I appreciate the recommendations for the Synology and QNAP models—I'll definitely consider them for my storage solution!
