I currently have a DS220j and am getting a DS415+ used. My 220j has 2-12TB drives and has a Raid-1 configuration. 1 Pool and 1 Volume. I'm currently running a hyperback on it to a USB external drive as I type. My main question is, can I set up the new NAS with Raid-10 and keep my data using Synology's migration tool, or will I need to set up the 4 discs of the 412+ first and do a Raid-10 and then do a restore from backup to get my data onto the new NAS?

Thank you for your question! Migrating from your DS220j to the DS415+ while changing the RAID configuration can be done, but it requires a bit of planning. Here’s how you can proceed:
Key Consideration:
When changing from RAID 1 (2 drives) to RAID 10 (4 drives), the data structure changes entirely, and Synology’s migration tool does not support directly changing RAID levels during migration. As a result, you’ll need to set up the new RAID-10 array first and then restore your data from the backup.
Steps to Migrate to DS415+ with RAID-10:
Complete Your Hyper Backup:
Ensure your backup on the USB external drive is complete and validated. This backup will be your safety net for restoring your data.
Set Up the DS415+ with RAID-10:
Insert your 4 drives into the DS415+.
Use Synology's setup wizard to initialize the NAS and create a new RAID-10 storage pool and volume.
Note: This will format all drives in the NAS, so ensure no critical data is on them before starting.
Restore from Backup:
Connect the USB external drive to the DS415+ and use Hyper Backup Restore to import your data onto the new RAID-10 setup.
Alternatively, if you have other backups (e.g., cloud or another device), you can use those for restoration as well.
Additional Tips:
Test the New Setup: Before fully switching over, confirm that your restored data is accessible and intact.
Optimize RAID-10 for Speed and Redundancy: RAID-10 is great for performance and redundancy but uses 50% of total drive capacity. Ensure this configuration aligns with your storage needs.
Future Backups: Continue using Hyper Backup with the USB drive or set up a second backup location for extra protection.
