For connecting your Mac to your NAS (Openmediavault) via Thunderbolt with a 1.5 or 2-meter cable, either an active or passive cable can be used. However, there are some considerations:

Passive Cables: These are typically sufficient for shorter distances (up to about 2 meters). They are less expensive and do not have built-in electronics to boost the signal.

Active Cables: These contain circuitry to boost the signal, allowing for longer cables and potentially more stable connections at higher speeds. If you experience any connectivity issues with a passive cable or need a longer cable, an active one might be necessary.

For a 1.5 to 2-meter connection, a passive Thunderbolt cable should work just fine, as Thunderbolt technology supports high-speed data transfer over these distances without significant signal degradation.

If you are planning on utilizing the full bandwidth and potential of Thunderbolt, such as for 4K video editing or other high-demand tasks, investing in a good quality passive cable from a reputable brand is recommended. If stability becomes an issue, then consider switching to an active cable.
