looking for a media server with the option to expand down the road to maybe include a file server or VM's. Would prefer 4+ bays and leaning towards synology DS1520+ so that I can use drives of different sizes

DS1520+ and DS920+ both come with graphics chip which is great for multimedia.
Also having 4-core CPU is perfect for virtual machines.
Synology new models will phase out multimedia support, so get your early.
