I got an open box deal on a Synology 425+ for $360. This is my first NAS and I was wondering if a spare 8GB DDR4 can be used to expand memory. The Intel J4125 processor says it can be expanded to 32GB. Am I in safe territory using this to expand my memory?

Yes, you can safely expand the memory in the DS425+. Synology officially supports up to 6GB in that model, but the Intel J4125 processor itself is capable of addressing up to 32GB, and many users run 8GB or even 16GB modules without problems.
The main things to check are:
• The module must be DDR4 SODIMM, non-ECC
• It should ideally match the speed (usually 2400 or 2666 MHz)
• Mixed sizes are fine
Even though Synology won’t officially “support” third-party RAM, it is widely used and works perfectly in most units, including the DS425+.
