If your main goal is to move on from the AS604T and keep the budget around £500, then I’d lean toward the newer generation 4-bay units that balance long-term updates with multimedia support.
The Asustor Lockerstor 4 Gen2 (AS6704T) would be the most natural successor. It has Intel Celeron inside with integrated graphics, which means both Jellyfin and Plex can take advantage of hardware transcoding for smoother streams. Asustor also tends to offer longer firmware support than they did in the older AS series, so you will be set for years. If you are open to Synology, the DS423+ sits close to your budget and gives you the benefit of DSM with its very polished apps. It can handle backups and multimedia well, but note that Synology has dropped hardware transcoding from this model, so Plex/Jellyfin will need to direct-play content instead of converting it on the fly. For modern TVs and devices that can already play H.264 or HEVC directly, this usually isn’t a problem. QNAP’s TS-464 is another strong option if you want maximum flexibility with 2.5GbE built in and HDMI output, though the software is more advanced and requires a bit more management. |
