Used AS6508T

#1
Can I create 2 volumes of raid 5 one using 5x8T drives and other 10tx5. PrimaryV1 backup to Vw.

Do you see a problem with this method and can it be done?

Yes, you can create two separate RAID 5 volumes with different sets of drives on the AS6508T, one with 5x8TB drives and the other with 5x10TB drives. The idea of using one volume as a primary storage volume and the other as a backup volume is entirely feasible.

Here are a few things to consider:

Performance and Space Efficiency:
RAID 5 provides redundancy, but the usable storage will be the size of the smallest drive in each set multiplied by the number of drives minus one. For your 5x8TB array, you'll have 32TB usable (8TB x 4), and for your 5x10TB array, you'll have 40TB usable (10TB x 4). This is a good way to balance storage and redundancy.

Backup Process:
If you plan on backing up the Primary Volume (V1) to the Backup Volume (Vw), make sure your backup process is automated (e.g., using rsync or similar tools) to avoid manual errors and ensure consistency between the two volumes.

Mixing Drive Sizes:
While it’s fine to use different sized drives in each RAID group, make sure both arrays are set up correctly, as mixing sizes within a single RAID 5 group (using the same drives for both) is not recommended. But since you're setting up two separate RAID groups, there’s no issue with mixing 8TB and 10TB drives across the two.

Disk Health and Monitoring:
Make sure to monitor both RAID groups for any disk failures and keep an eye on their health. RAID 5 provides redundancy, but it's still important to replace any failing drives as soon as possible.

This method can absolutely work as long as you plan your backup strategy carefully and monitor the system closely.
