Currently, we have an Synology DS416play as Main storage and an DS120j for the backup. Since a few months we get more and more error messages and especially the main NAS feels very slow. Replacing the harddisks did not help, so we assume that we need a new one soon and looking for a performant setup with easy Backup Solution. Currently, we use 7 TB of data and think that around 10-12TB should be sufficient for the upcoming years. We are happy with the diskstation software, but the available Hardware looks quite old.

Thank you for reaching out! I understand that you’re experiencing issues with your current Synology DS416play and DS120j, and it sounds like an upgrade is in order to enhance performance and ensure reliable backups for your photography business.
Given your current usage of 7 TB and your anticipated need for around 10-12 TB, I recommend considering moving your drives to a newer model like the Synology DS423+ or DS923+.
Synology DS423+: This model features a quad-core processor and supports up to 32 TB of storage using larger drives. It offers excellent performance for media access and management, making it a great choice for your photography needs.
Synology DS923+: If you’re looking for even more power, the DS923+ provides enhanced performance with a more robust CPU and supports up to 80 TB of storage. It also has NVMe slots for SSD caching, which can significantly boost access speeds, especially for larger files.
Both models will allow you to transfer your existing drives from your DS416play, making the migration process smoother while continuing to use the user-friendly DiskStation Manager (DSM) software you’re familiar with.
For backup solutions, consider utilizing Synology’s Hyper Backup tool to ensure your data is safely backed up to another NAS, external drives, or cloud services.
