QNAP TS-464 4-bay

#1
Hi there,

First time buyer here setting up a Plex NAS for a family member. Plan is to shuck 18TB WD Elements HDDs (have 1 already), with the NAS being used for cloud storage also. I’m hoping to manage the NAS remotely.

Synology excluded for poor 3rd party hardware support (S.M.A.R.T) Sad

Currently looking at the QNAP TS-464 4-bay. Do you know duration of software support?

Main concern with QNAP is security (ransomware). Angry Reddit forums suggest you can't connect a QNAP NAS to internet at all?

NordVPN (OpenVPN) is running on the home router presently, could Nord Meshnet be used with remote devices as a private tunnel, bridging VPN & to access internet safely? Any suggestions welcome?

Are there any good second-hand retailers for NAS enclosures, or would you recommend buying new? We could until Black Friday at the latest for a good deal.

Many thanks for all you do!

Kind regards Smile

Thank you for reaching out regarding your plans to set up a Plex NAS and cloud storage solution using the QNAP TS-464 4-bay NAS.

The QNAP TS-464 is a reliable choice for your requirements, especially considering its support for Plex and cloud storage functionalities. QNAP provides software updates and support for their NAS devices for a minimum of 10 years, ensuring longevity and ongoing security improvements.

Regarding security, if the NAS is not exposed to the internet and you regularly update its firmware, it can be considered secure against common threats like ransomware. QNAP regularly releases firmware updates to address security vulnerabilities, so it's essential to apply these updates promptly.

For remote access, consider using Tailscale, which provides secure and easy-to-use VPN solutions for connecting to your NAS remotely. Tailscale ensures encrypted communication between your devices, enhancing security when accessing your NAS over the internet.

When considering purchasing a NAS enclosure, buying new ensures you receive the latest hardware features and warranty coverage. However, reputable second-hand retailers can also offer good deals, particularly around events like Black Friday. Ensure any second-hand NAS is in good condition and check for warranty coverage.
