First off I enjoy the videos that you create

I am planning to start a Plex server but not sure what NAS to get, I have a feeling I will be playing on tablets (3) and also TVs in the House. I am thinking of going with Synology but you are the expert! I currently have about 2 TB of videos on external WD drives that I used when deployed to Afghanistan, and planning to add all the DVDs and Blue rays I have. I will also have Family Photos I be uploading to it off my Google account.
4- 6 Bay is what I am thinking It can be rack mounted or desk top
Also what do you recommend for ripping software to get the DVD/Blue rays on to the NAS?

For local streaming, there is no problem with transcoding. Only if you have 4k videos that you try to stream on 1080p screens. People still seem to rip all videos into FHD quality. Size and quality simply make sense. Synology DS920+ and Qnap- ts-664 /653D is the most popular choice. They come with multimedia-friendly hardware and there is software limitations on these models. If you did need remote 4k transcoding then Qnap 73A series with GPU card or any NAS with Xeon would allow you to achieve that.

DVDfab seem to be popular rip software.
