Hi. Read your article regarding unofficial memory upgrades. Just got my RS1221RP+ a couple days ago but yep, only 4gb of memory installed. I'm interested to know how the gear will react if I installed the two 32gb Kingston memory modules. I have never exceeded the listed capacity of a piece of equipment and being able to do this would be a real plus. My son is putting together a AI system that requires a large amount of memory & being able to allocate half of the 64gb of memory into a vm for him would be ideal. I am by no means a hardware expert but seems installing non-ecc memory would defeat the internal process programmed into this NAS but, if it is still a good option as indicated by at least one persons comments then I'm willing to go at it as well. Let me know if you would please.

Regarding the memory upgrade, yes, despite Synology officially capping support at 32GB (2 x 16GB ECC), many users — including some of our own tests — have successfully installed 2 x 32GB DDR4 ECC SODIMMs for a total of 64GB. The system will typically boot and recognize the full capacity, and performance has remained stable in most real-world use cases, especially for VMs and Docker workloads.
Just make sure the memory you use is DDR4-2666 ECC SODIMM (not UDIMM or non-ECC), ideally from a reliable server-grade line like Kingston’s KSM series (e.g., KSM26SED8/32HD). Non-ECC memory often won’t boot or can lead to instability due to Synology’s stricter BIOS-level checks on the RS models. ECC is strongly recommended here.
So in your case — yes, you can absolutely try the 2 x 32GB modules, and if all goes well you can assign 32GB+ to your son’s AI VM without issue. The RS1221+ won’t complain as long as the memory matches spec and passes POST.
