So I've recently seen the new Kickstarter ORICO CyberData AI-powered NAS and was looking at backing the CF1000 however I've also just seen the new UGREEN AI NAS and I am conflicted about which one to back/ wait for. I understand the 10 bay compared with 6 bays, I'm currently rocking 4 bays however only 3 are in use, I'm about to purchase my 4th drive however I'm now looking at upgrading so when i need to expand again it will be ready to go. If you could help me out and give me your opinion that would be greatly apricated.

The ORICO CF1000 is a more ambitious platform, particularly with the 10-bay option, which gives you far more room to grow. If you know you’ll eventually move beyond 6–8 drives, then starting with something like the CF1000 makes sense and saves you from having to upgrade again in a couple of years. It’s also built more around AI and heavy local processing, and they’ve shown some promising specs and features in their demos. That said, ORICO’s NAS experience is quite limited. They’re primarily a storage accessory company, and their NAS software is still very early. If you go that route, you’re taking a bit more risk on software maturity, which might mean more bugs and more manual tweaking at launch.
The UGREEN AI NAS series, particularly the 6-bay and 8-bay units, feels like the safer choice in terms of polished software and user experience. UGREEN has already put more time into their NAS OS and it has been improving quickly with regular updates. The downside is that the largest model currently announced is 8 bays, which limits your long-term capacity compared to the ORICO CF1000. For many home users though, 6–8 bays is plenty for the next several years, especially if you’re filling with 12TB drives as you’ve planned.
If your priority is maximum future-proofing and you’re comfortable taking a bit more risk on software polish and support, the ORICO CF1000 makes sense. If you prefer something that’s more stable out of the box and are happy to stick to 6–8 bays, then the UGREEN AI NAS would probably be the better choice today.
Either way, it’s good to see you planning ahead on drive capacity. Going with 12TB drives now and leaving yourself room to expand is a solid plan.
