Comparing Synology DS 24 vs 23 Series

#1
Hi your information is fantastic. Based on the different videos and articles, it seems like the 24 series (DS224+) vs DS423+, the older ones fare better in your reviews. I am interested in a small use case - mostly cloud backup. The desire is for Plex/Jellyfin but it seems like getting a mini PC is better to run streaming and use the Synology for just storage. I do want some future proofing so as you said, more drive bays = more scalability. I don't want to break the bank - lower than $900 - $1K. I am in the US so I can use BHPhoto, Adorama, or a local store. Do you recommend 23 series over 24 series?

Thanks for the message and for following the channel. You’ve got the right idea — for your use case (mostly cloud backups and some Plex/Jellyfin), there’s no real reason to chase the newer 24-series Synology models. In fact, the DS423+ and DS923+ from the 23-series are often better value right now, and they use more proven hardware.

The DS423+ is ideal if you want 4 bays, solid Plex support, and simple expandability. The DS923+ costs a little more but adds better virtualization performance, 10GbE upgrade options, and longer support life. Both are still far more capable and future-proof than the DS224+.

You’re also right that a mini PC for Plex/Jellyfin (like a Beelink or Minisforum unit) will outperform any NAS at the same price, so using the NAS purely for storage and backup is the smarter split.

If you can find the DS423+ for under $700 or the DS923+ near your $900–$1,000 budget, either one would be an excellent long-term solution.
