You’re right — Synology’s QuickConnect only works with DSM-native apps, so it won’t tunnel Jellyfin traffic. To get Jellyfin working remotely, you’ll need one of the following approaches:

• Tailscale – This is the simplest and most secure option. Install Tailscale on your Synology and on your remote devices, and Jellyfin will appear as if it’s on the same local network. No port forwarding, no certificates, just a secure VPN tunnel.
• Reverse proxy – Synology DSM includes Application Portal and reverse proxy settings. You can map an external URL (like jellyfin.yourdomain.com) to the internal Jellyfin port, add SSL, and then connect securely from outside. This requires you to own a domain or use a dynamic DNS service.
• Port forwarding – You can manually open the Jellyfin port (default 8096) on your router and point it to the NAS. This works but is less secure unless you set up HTTPS with Let’s Encrypt and make sure Jellyfin is always patched. I only recommend this if you’re comfortable with the risks.

For most home users, Tailscale is the best balance of easy and safe. It takes about 5 minutes to set up and works on Apple TV, iOS, Android, Windows, and macOS. Once it’s installed, you just log into Jellyfin using the NAS’s Tailscale IP.
