Which switch?

#1
I am thinking of setting up my own NAS using DXP4800 and wondered about a switch for it. I have a 1GB fibre optic internet system and have wired this to my TV but wish to put all of the family photos and videos as well as movies onto this NAS to share with everyone in the house. But am struggling with the switch as I'm after a 10GbE capable one for less than £100 but the info is too much!!! Can you help or point in the general direction at all please? Thanks

Finding a reliable 10GbE switch under £100 is a bit tricky, but there are still some solid options if you’re okay with using SFP+ ports instead of RJ45. SFP+ switches are usually cheaper, and you can use SFP+ to RJ45 (10GBASE-T) modules or direct attach cables (DAC) if connecting directly to a device with SFP+ or an RJ45 port via adapter.

Here are a few suggestions:
• MikroTik CRS305-1G-4S+IN – This is often just under or around the £100 mark second-hand. It has 4 x SFP+ 10GbE ports and one Gigabit port for uplink. Fanless and very compact.
• QNAP QSW-2104-2S – A hybrid switch with 2 x SFP+ and 4 x 2.5GbE RJ45. Often £90–£110 depending on offers.
• TP-Link TL-SX105 or TL-SX1008 – These are 5 and 8-port 10GbE RJ45 switches, but typically above £100. Still worth watching for discounts.

If your NAS has SFP+ ports or you’re using a 10GbE PCIe NIC with SFP+ support, DAC cables are by far the cheapest way to get connected — around £10–£15 per cable.

If you’re sticking with RJ45 only and want a true 10GBASE-T switch under £100, you’ll be limited to used/refurb options on eBay. The Netgear XS505M or XS508M occasionally dip into that range used.
