Use storage out of DX213 in DS925+

#1
Hi,

Thanks for all the information. I now know I can migrate my drives from my DS713+ to the DS925+. I have a DS713+ combined with a DX213 and want to upgrade to the DS925+.

As I read here, I can transfer the drives from my DS713+ to the DS925+. I've fully updated my DS713+ and it's now running DSM 7.1.1.-42962 update 9.

Unfortunately, I'm being told I can no longer use my DX213, so I want to use my two drives from my DX in the DS925+ as well. Is that possible? Does it simply mean that if I put them in the DS925+, they'll run as a second pool?

Do you have any tips on this?

Or is it somehow possible to connect my DX213 to the DS9245+, just like there is a solution for the unsupported drives?

I look forward to your response. Thanks in advance!

Regards, Bob

You’re absolutely right that you can migrate the drives from your DS713+ to the DS925+ — just make sure you keep the original order and do not choose “Initialize” when setting it up. The system should recognize the volume and let you continue using it without data loss.

As for the DX213, unfortunately, that expansion unit uses the older eSATA connection, which is no longer supported on newer NAS models like the DS925+. The DS925+ only supports expansion via USB-C to DX525, and older expansion units can’t be connected physically or with any workaround — even the drive-mounting hack for unsupported drives won’t help here because the connection protocol itself is incompatible.

However, you can still reuse the two drives from your DX213 inside the DS925+ itself. Here’s how:
• Simply insert the two DX213 drives into empty bays in the DS925+
• You’ll be prompted to create a new storage pool/volume with them (they won’t merge into your existing pool)
• Yes, they will appear as a second volume or pool, completely separate from your migrated DS713+ drives
• You can use that pool for general storage, backups, media, etc.

One tip — if those DX213 drives are currently in a RAID configuration (e.g., RAID 1), they won’t auto-import into the DS925+. You’ll need to recreate the pool on the DS925+ (so make sure to back up any data on them first if needed).
