Thanks again for reaching out. Since you’re feeling a bit stuck with your DS923+, here’s a simple walkthrough to help get things working properly again — especially for backups and Synology Photos. I’ll break this down into manageable steps so you can follow along at your own pace.
1. Check DSM Is Up to Date Log into your NAS and go to Control Panel > Update & Restore. Make sure DSM is running the latest version. Updates often fix bugs and improve app functionality, especially for Photos and backup tools. 2. Backups – What to Use and How If you’re backing up the NAS itself (to an external drive or another NAS/cloud): • Use Hyper Backup. • Open Hyper Backup and create a new task (e.g. to an external drive or a Synology C2 cloud account). • Select the folders and applications to back up and schedule it as needed. If you’re backing up devices to the NAS: • Use Synology Drive Client (for PCs/macOS). Install the app on each computer and set up scheduled or continuous folder backup to the NAS. • For mobile device backups (like photos), use Synology Photos app (see below). 3. Synology Photos Setup (For Automatic Photo Backup) • Install Synology Photos from Package Center if it’s not already there. • Then install the Synology Photos mobile app from the App Store or Google Play on your phone. • Open the app, sign in to your NAS using your IP address or QuickConnect ID, and enable Auto Upload in the app’s settings. • On the NAS, you can manage access, albums, and permissions via the Synology Photos interface. 4. Organizing Your Files Create clear shared folders (e.g. Photos, Videos, Backups, etc.) via Control Panel > Shared Folder. It’s much easier to manage backups and indexing when files are stored logically. Make sure your user account has the right permissions under Control Panel > User & Group. 5. Accessing Files Remotely If you want to access your NAS from outside your home network, use QuickConnect or set up DDNS and port forwarding: • Go to Control Panel > External Access and enable QuickConnect • Or set up a DDNS hostname and forward ports (usually 5000/5001, or others depending on the app) 6. General Tips • Use Storage Manager to check drive health and RAID status • Turn on Snapshots if using Btrfs, especially for important folders (protects against accidental deletions or ransomware) I know this is a lot, but you don’t need to do it all in one go. Start with getting DSM updated, then work through the Photos setup and backups. If anything gets confusing along the way, feel free to email me with screenshots or descriptions of where you’re stuck and I’ll point you in the right direction. https://www.youtube.com/@nascompares/sea...gy%20setup |
