How to synchronise data between volumes on the same NAS

#1
Hello
I have a Synology DS 224+, with two 8TB HDDs installed. Most of the data I have is not critical, so rather than mirror the whole disc as with Raid 1, which would halve my storage capacity, I would like to just mirror my important files. Is this possible?
Thank you in advance

Yes, what you’re looking to do is definitely possible on the DS224+ without using RAID 1. Instead of mirroring the entire drive, you can configure your drives as separate volumes (Basic or SHR with a single disk each), and then use Synology Drive, Hyper Backup, or Shared Folder Sync to selectively copy only your important files from one volume to the other.

Here’s a quick breakdown of how to do this:
1. Set up two separate volumes — one on each 8TB drive. You can do this in Storage Manager during initial setup or after removing any existing RAID configuration.
2. Use Synology Drive or Hyper Backup:
• Synology Drive is great for real-time syncing of specific folders (e.g., Documents, Photos). You install Synology Drive Server, then use the Drive Admin Console to set sync tasks between shared folders on different volumes.
• Hyper Backup is better for scheduled backups and allows for versioning. You can back up folders from Volume 1 to Volume 2 on a daily or weekly schedule.
• Shared Folder Sync also works, but it’s more commonly used between separate NAS devices. It can still do the job locally with some setup.

This way, you preserve the full storage capacity of both drives but still get a level of protection for your most important data.
