Guy wrot an post on 1821+ and unsupported ram

#1
Hello
I m writing about the : https://nascompares.com/2021/04/28/synology-ds1821-nas-unofficial-32gb-64gb-memory-upgrade-walkthrough/#Kingston_Crucial_Synology_DS1821_Memory_Upgrade_-_Step_3_Checking_the_Memory_is_Usable

Me too i've the 1821+ main unit + 2 extension case : in total 18hdds ( 8to each if my memory is right)

I ve planned to upgrade the ram of the main unit at 32 or 64 go.
But it's very hard to find 64go in 2 x32gb dual ranked.
This one https://www.amazon.fr/Crucial-3200MHz-Ordinateur-Portable-Performance/dp/B07ZLCVKPV/
Or

https://www.amazon.fr/Corsair-Vengeance-SODIMM-2x32-DDR4/dp/B08GSRD34Y/

May i ask you your opinion ?

Thanks and regards fro France

Thanks for your message and for sharing the details of your setup. That DS1821+ with two expansion units and 18 drives is already a very capable machine, and upgrading the RAM is a good idea to help keep everything running smoothly under heavier loads.

You’re right that finding 2×32GB DDR4 SODIMM modules that are dual-rank and fully compatible can be tricky. Of the two options you linked, the Crucial kit is the safer bet for the DS1821+. Many users have reported success with the Crucial 64GB (2×32GB, DDR4-3200) even though Synology only officially supports up to 32GB.

The Corsair Vengeance kits are excellent quality, but they tend to be optimized more for gaming laptops and high-performance notebooks, and there have been mixed reports about stability in Synology units when using them.

So my recommendation is to go with the Crucial kit you found. Even though it is marketed at 3200MHz, the DS1821+ memory controller will simply run it at its maximum supported speed of 2666MHz without any issue.

If you’re running semi-business workloads on that NAS, you might also want to run a memory test through the DSM web interface once installed to be sure everything is stable before putting it into production.
