I am looking to replace my Synology 920+ with an 8 bay. I was going to go with the 1825+ but with the HDD nonsense I want to go somewhere else. I use my NAS for Plex and storing photos and videos mostly.
I am interested in the Zettlabs and have even backed the D8 Ultra, but I want to know your advice, it's worrying after Storaxa of course.

Thanks for your message — and totally understand the concern, especially after the whole Storaxa situation. That left a lot of people understandably skeptical about crowdfunded NAS projects.
That said, the Zettlabs D8 Ultra looks like a very different story. They’ve already sent out sample NAS units to reviewers, and there are early hands-on impressions showing the hardware is real and functional. While the software still needs some polishing (as you'd expect from a new platform), the fact that units are in circulation and being independently tested puts them well ahead of where Storaxa ever got.
Given your 130–150TB goal and Plex/media focus, the D8 Ultra does check a lot of boxes on paper — solid CPU, ECC support, ZFS, and wide drive compatibility. If you’ve backed it, it’s worth keeping your spot, but I’d still wait until reviews of the final retail units come out before fully retiring your current system.
In the meantime, if you're looking for a more immediate, stable alternative, I’d still lean toward something like the QNAP TVS-h874 or a custom TrueNAS build, depending on how hands-on you want to get.
