QNAP ts-464 -- remote use/M2 cache

#1
Hi Robbie, Thanks for the help previously. I'm up and running - media working in home on samsung tvs and have access on my cell. However, i'm reading a variety of controversy on using ssd as a cache -- so not sure what to do there and I would like to allow my family to remotely connect to my server (5-7 users) but with Plex raising their prices I'm not sure the best path to take. I'd appreciate your thoughts. if plex is best option i can jump on the pass before the prices go up -- but I dont know the best path here. Thank you!

As for using an SSD as a cache in your QNAP TS-464, it really depends on your use case. If you're dealing with a lot of media streaming or high-demand tasks, the SSD cache could improve read/write speeds and boost performance. However, it’s not always necessary for everyone, especially if your current RAID 1 setup is already providing good speeds for your media needs. SSD caching works best in scenarios where there are a lot of small, random I/O operations, so if your primary use is streaming large media files, you may not see a massive performance boost.

Regarding remote access and Plex, with Plex's price increases, it’s worth considering alternatives like Jellyfin or Emby. Both are free and open-source, with Jellyfin being more community-driven and a solid choice for media servers. If your family mostly uses Plex and you're happy with its experience, jumping on the Plex Pass before the price increase might be a good idea, as it offers features like mobile sync, offline access, and premium metadata, which could be useful for your needs.

If you want to minimize cost but still have a solid solution, Jellyfin could be the best option. However, if you want the premium features of Plex and are okay with the cost, Plex Pass could still be the way to go for now.
