Wait for 425+ or go for 423+?

#1
Hi there,

I was just about to pull the trigger on a 423+ for a Plex / photo studio home server / NAS setup. But then they announced the 425+.

It doesn't feel like the 423+ has come down in price in anticipation nor is there any release date announced for the 425+ -- so I'm somewhat between a rock and a hard place.

How would you advise someone looking to buy imminently for a great Plex solution?

Thanks!

James.

The main difference between the DS423+ and the upcoming DS425+ seems to be the 2.5GbE port on the DS425+, which will offer faster network speeds compared to the 1GbE on the DS423+. Additionally, the DS425+ will come with two extra years of firmware updates, making it a slightly more future-proof option.

If you're looking for a NAS right now, the DS423+ is still a fantastic choice, offering great performance for Plex, photo storage, and general NAS use. The 1GbE port on the DS423+ is more than enough for most home use cases, especially if you don't have a multi-gigabit network setup.

In short, if you're okay with waiting for the DS425+ and want the faster 2.5GbE connection and extended firmware support, it’s worth holding out. But if you want to get started right away, the DS423+ is a very solid option, and the difference may not be critical for your current needs.
