New NAS

#1
I was looking at either the new Ugreen NAS coming soon from CES 2025 you had an excellent video on. I am also looking at either the Terramaster Max 6Bay I believe its the f6424 max or i’m looking at the lockerstor 6 bay gen 3.

Uses: Plex/Emby/JellyFin (Movies, TV series, Anime, possible mobile upload remotely) mostly accessing NAS from home and some remote access. Qbittorrent as well, and VPNs through either SurfShark or NordVPN

VM: I want to create a few VMs I like parallels (this actually might be installed on M4 Mac mini instead)

Little to none video editing from a action camera and some iPhone

I am in no rush I currently have approx 40TB of stuff currently

Access will come from home from M4 Mac mini, some PC laptops, Streaming devices, and other computers. As well as the same remotely.

Thank you

Thanks for reaching out with your question! Based on your needs, here’s a quick breakdown of the NAS options you're considering:

Ugreen NAS (CES 2025):

This is still a bit of an unknown until it’s released and reviewed. But it might offer something exciting, especially with its potential hardware and software features. Once it’s officially out, it would be worth checking reviews for compatibility with your use cases like Plex/Emby/Jellyfin, VPNs, and VMs. Keep an eye on the official specs and community feedback.
Terramaster F6424 Max:

The Terramaster Max 6Bay F6424 is a solid choice, offering a good balance of price and performance. It supports up to 6 drives (each 20TB as per your plan), which is ideal for your large storage needs. It's also capable of running apps like Plex, Emby, and Jellyfin without a hitch. However, be mindful of the limited software ecosystem compared to brands like Synology or QNAP, which might impact things like remote access and app flexibility.
ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Bay Gen 3:

The Lockerstor 6 Bay Gen 3 offers a more refined user experience and robust software environment (ADM OS). It comes with 10GbE options on some models and is quite capable of handling media servers, torrents, and VPNs. This NAS would be great for Plex and media storage, offering better app and network performance than the Terramaster. It’s also better for remote access and running VMs, which is a plus for your setup. It’s often considered more “future-proof” than the Terramaster, especially with their strong focus on media and business applications.
Recommendations:
For your use cases (media, torrents, VPNs, remote access), the ASUSTOR Lockerstor 6 Bay Gen 3 might be the best fit. It’s well-equipped for streaming, has good support for both Plex and Jellyfin, and its software ecosystem offers flexibility for your business needs. If you plan on setting up VMs and need reliable network performance, this would likely offer better long-term value.

The Terramaster F6424 Max would work well too, but if your business relies on reliable remote access and software flexibility, the ASUSTOR might win out in that area.

It’s also worth considering whether you’d need 10GbE networking, as this could make a big difference for streaming and transferring large files.

Ugreen NAS sounds intriguing! Do you know if it will support 2.5GbE or 10GbE networking for faster data transfers? That could be a game-changer for media streaming and backups!
