Synology DS1522+ drives

#1
I am looking to upgrade some drives in my DS1522+. On the compatibility guide I see ST14000VN0008 and ST12000VN0008

On Amazon I can see ST14000NE0008 and ST12000NE0008 what is the difference? Will these be ok do you think. I know Synology will say they are not tested, but I was interested in your thoughts or experiences.

The ST14000VN0008 and ST12000VN0008 models you saw on the compatibility guide are from Seagate's IronWolf series, which are designed specifically for NAS environments. The ST14000NE0008 and ST12000NE0008 models you see on Amazon are from the IronWolf Pro series, which are also NAS-optimized but offer additional features like higher workload rates and a longer warranty period compared to the regular IronWolf models.

While the IronWolf Pro (NE series) are not listed in Synology’s official compatibility guide for the DS1522+, they should generally work just fine with your DS1522+. The key difference between the regular IronWolf and IronWolf Pro models is primarily in the drive’s endurance and warranty, so the Pro series could provide slightly better performance and reliability over time, especially for heavy use. That said, they are very similar in terms of actual performance and NAS compatibility.

Synology’s official stance is often that drives not listed in their compatibility guide may not be supported, but many users have successfully used non-listed drives in their NAS units without issues. If you choose the IronWolf Pro series, you'll be getting a more robust drive, which could be worth the investment for peace of mind, especially if you plan to use your NAS for high-demand workloads.

To summarize:

The IronWolf Pro (NE) should work, and it's likely fine to use in your DS1522+.
You’ll get a longer warranty and potentially better durability with the Pro series, but the regular IronWolf drives would still be a solid choice if you're looking to save a bit.
