2 bay Qnap restructure

#1
Hello lads, i have a 2 bay Qnap from about 5 years ago and it’s been ok with a 4TB Samsung 870 qvo (I think) in each bay. I was thinking about getting a QDA-A2AR and putting the 2 samsung SSDs in bay one as a stripe to double storage and putting an 8TB hdd in bay 2 for NAS backup, My question is, would the system allow this and would it work ?

Your plan to use the QDA-A2AR to stripe your two Samsung 870 QVO SSDs in Bay 1 while adding an 8TB HDD in Bay 2 for backup is interesting, but there are a few things to consider.

First, QNAP does support the QDA-A2AR adapter for RAID 0 (striping) and RAID 1 (mirroring) in a single bay, so in theory, your two 4TB SSDs could be recognized as an 8TB volume. However, compatibility depends on your specific QNAP model and firmware. Some older QNAP units may not fully support the adapter, so it’s worth checking QNAP’s compatibility list for your model.

Second, having an SSD RAID 0 array in one bay and an HDD in the other is possible, but the way the system sees them depends on how you configure your storage pool. If you set them up as separate volumes, your SSDs would be your primary storage, and the HDD could be manually used for backup. However, you cannot mix them in the same RAID group, as RAID requires uniform drive types.

Finally, consider that RAID 0 has no redundancy, so if one of your SSDs fails, you lose all data on that array. Make sure your backup strategy is solid before proceeding. If your QNAP allows it, you could use Hybrid Backup Sync to schedule backups from the SSDs to the HDD automatically.

If your QNAP supports the QDA-A2AR, your plan should work, but I recommend confirming compatibility with your NAS model before purchasing. Let me know if you need help checking that!
